| Former capital of Provence, Aix-en-Provence is situated between Marseille (19 miles/31 km) and Avignon (51.6 miles/83 km). Birthplace of the famous painter Paul Cézanne, the city offers festivals all year long, thriving café scene, as well as many restaurants, fashion boutiques, museums, art galleries, colorful markets, shady fountains and magnificent houses, many of which date back to the 17th and 18th centuries. Situated in a rather soulless (if pleasant enough) commuter suburb to Aix-en-Provence, we couldn't find the property using their own directions (absolutely hopeless) - but Venere's were excellent,clear and dead accurate. The accommodation was clean, of reasonable size with the usual minimum of cooking facilities for its type; reasonable balcony and swimming pool was fine, if small. We asked for, but didn't get, adjoining rooms for 2 couples and the twin beds had sheets only for one...
Overall acceptable accommodation if distinctly lacking personality and charm.
