Nice hotel with wonderful breakfast. Has own parking - a real plus. Walk to Volterra along busy street for first 100m then up a steep hill.

It is an amazing hotel which looks like a host room: very quiet, beautiful decoration, nice hosts, very close to the center of Volterra... It was the best hotel we booked in Toscan! A very good surprise!

The people running the hotel are so friendly they really make you feel as if you were staying with friends. The breakfast they serve is very good; they offer both sweet and savoury and a large variety of very good home made cakes. I thoroughly recommend this lovely hotel.

Volterra was a highlight on this trip. Hotel Villa Porta all'Arco was fantastic. The capuccinos in the morning and the homemade cakes for breakfast in the garden were a fantastic way to begin the day. The owner was one of the friendliest people we met and she even took our bags to the bus stop in her car for us.

Excellent reception on arrival, although we had to ring and wait for staff to attend as no one lives on site. Drinks provided free on arrival. Nice spacious clean rooms. Excellent breakfast including home made cakes from family who run the establishment. Property is fairly tight to busy main road at front with road noise and not much garden space to rear. As close as you can probably get to town if parking is required, as small parking area in front of premises. We only had a one night stay with a group of ten but would certainly recomment this bed and breakfast establishment as a base to discover the town.
United Kingdom, Jul 2008
Very friendly welcome, outstanding breakfasts, excellent location being close to Volterra but without the need to drive in the cobbled streets, some with steps. Best avoided if you do not like steep inclines. My wife and I will stay again.

Perfect hotel, lovely breakfast very welcoming and very close to town. Only one bad thing, the house exit went straight out onto a busy road and there was no footpath making it a little dangerous.

Absolutely loved this sweet and charming hotel and definately recommend it to everyone! stayed here 4 nights, enjoyed tremendously the wonderful breakfasts (and of course Antonela's mother's delicious home made cakes and the good italian coffee), the comfortable room and the location was excellent - not at all a hard walk to Volterra (with our baby we climbed the stairs and it took less than 5 minutes). Agrre with the others - the best hotel we stayed in our 2 week trip in Italy!

The owner who runs this small romantic traditional hotel is absolutely lovely. She mad us feel very welcome, and was perfectly fine about changing rooms (to get a better view) for the 2nd night of our stay. Breakfast is sumptuous, and included home made cakes. She brought us coffee in the afternoon at no extra charge. The hotel is perfectly positioned for Volterra, just outside the town walls, and has parking (for small cars). We would definitely stay there again. (It's not for children though).

I can't say enough good things about this place! Volterra was my favorite stop in our 2 week visit to Italy and this was my favorite hotel. The town feels authentic, not like a show put on for tourists. Yet it is small and you can feel like you really get to know it all, not just see a few tourist spots. We had wonderful interactions with locals who are not yet sick of tourists like some other locations. The staff at the hotel were kind and generous - for example, as we sat near the garden reading one rainy afternoon, they came by and offered to make us some cappucino and brought it with cookies. The villa is decorated nicely in common areas as well as the rooms. Breakfast includes fresh fruit, boiled eggs, meats, and cheeses, and an amazing array of delicious baked goods. We enjoyed sitting in the garden as well as our room. It was the most upscale little hotel we stayed in, but not the most expensive, and I thought it was a very good value. This was our "restful" stop between the dirtier, rougher city of Rome, and the hectic, museum laden Florence. Well worth the extra work to reach this town off the beaten path and the couple of days on our 2 week itinerary. The only possible negative - there is a climb up numerous stairs to get to the portal into the old walled city and the entire town has is up and down with some steep inclines. This is not a place for people with bad knees.

Fantastic unbelieveable hospitality. And only a short (but steep) walk to the Porta all'Arco entrance to Volterra. The breakfast is wonderful. The only drawback is the extremely small carpark. Do not bring a large car to this location.

A warm and friendly welcome, and cheerful and helpful service throughout our stay. An ideal location for exploring Volterra - a fascinating city - and the beautiful surrounding area. Excellent breakfasts, with the ricotta cheesecake particularly memorable! If we were to visit this area again we would stay at the Hotel Villa Porta all'Arco without any doubt.

Probably one of the best hotels of our trip. We had a HUGE, spotless room on the first floor, which I believe was the handicapped equipped room. There were probably four other couples/families there, and we didn't hear a peep out of anyone except for when we were all down at breakfast. We arrived early and no one was at reception so my husband did some planning for our evening and I took a nap in the car. When the woman arrived, she was so apologetic, but we were completely fine. She gave us a great rundown of the restaurants and a detailed map with everything circled and highlighted. She was great. Breakfast was fabulous, the best we had on the trip. There were two or three different cakes, a huge fruit spread, yogurts, cereals, sausages, bacon, cheeses, eggs, juices, you name it. They made specialty coffees and continuously kept an eye on refills. The walk from here to town was a bit steep, but do-able. Volterra itself was a terrific town and we absolutely loved it.

This quaint hotel is a must. The proprietress was an absolute sweetheart, friendly, bubbly and made sure we were more than comfortable. Her mom makes the wonderful cheesecake that you can enjoy at the full spread breakfast. The cappucino came in the largest mug and was most excellent. We were also overly pleased with the quiet, warm and inviting hotel room. The bathroom was ample size and all was super clean. Thanks again for such a pleasant stay!

I have no hesitation in recommending this hotel. The car park though on the small side, could accomodate all our cars, and although on a fairly busy road, our room at the back overlooked the whole valley and was very quiet. The villa is so charming and beautifully presented.Antonella, the owner speaks good English, she is friendly and welcoming, and serves the most wonderful breakfasts. The hotel is situated on the main road up to Volterra, and you walk just a few yards up the road, cross over and up several flights of steps to the old main gate, in all about 5 minutes and you are in the lovely old town. There are masses of resteraunts, and nice shops to browse and buy. We were very happy with our stay.

Villa Porta all'Arco is lovely, our room was very spacious and tasteful. The breakfast was the most comprehensive one we had in Italy. If you don't mind an uphill climb, its not to difficult to get to the town inside the walls which is very charming. The views from the road just outside the walls are beautiful, and we came upon ruins of a Roman theatre by accident.

Antonella and her staff do an excellent job of maintaining the site, welcoming, and serving a great breakfast. The rooms are spacious and nicely furnished. The location of the hotel is excellent, within walking distance of Volterra's sites. The noise in the rooms near the road may bother a light sleeper.

One of our best stays in Italy. The owner (Antionella?) was a very gracious host. Breakfast was excellent, the location was excellent and Voltarre is a fun place to be. Make sure you eat at La Pace. Talk to the owner (a former motorcycle and auto racer). They have great food and the set menu is well worth it. We ate there several times. Bring a big appetite. The hotel was very convenient and the staff went out of their way to make sure that we had everything we needed. I recommend this place to anybody; it is well worth the price.

Agree with other comments about this place. Very good! the highlight was the most helpful lady who runs the hotel - she is fantastic! she helped us in every way, even directed traffic to help us get our car out!! Lovely old building, big rooms, great breakfast. Probabaly the best place we stayed in. Short walk up hill into volterra town. Would definitely return.

The receptionist/manager was SO VERY VERY welcoming and helpful. She was so friendly, she did normal receptionist duties like show you a map and Points of interest but it felt like so much more because she was so darn friendly! We took a day trip at her recommendation to Populonia which was stellar! The walk up to the city center was a STEEP block long walk UP.

Positives are their excellent, varied breakfast with wonderful coffee, the best of our time in Italy, and the outstanding helpfulness of the staff. A disadvantage is that to walk into Volterra, one must cross a very busy roadway and walk a very steep hill. Volterra was certainly worth our visit, but it's only for good walkers.

It was a fabolous hotel. Our room was very big and clean. The hotel was very closely situated to Volterra city centre. If you go by car they also have their own parking for your car. And what a breakfast! Just marvellous with at least 6-7 different home-made cakes besides the normally breakfast. So good! And the female owner who owned this hotel was so kind and caring for all her guests, so if you go to Volterra please choose this hotel, it is absolutely worth the price you pay!

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and appreciated the extra hospitality: I had the flu and the management was very kind, letting us check in early and serving both of us complimentary hot beverages. It is a little hard to spot because it's on a busy road, but the location also makes it handy to the walled city, and we never heard the traffic. The breakfast was wonderful and included several types of cheese and homemade pastries/cakes.

A lovely hotel with clean bright rooms that are tastefully decorated in keeping with the period of the property. Antonella is extremely helpful and welcoming. The breakfasts are splendid! The hotel is just outside the city walls - only a five minute walk from the centre of Volterra - and this is actually a real plus if you have a car as Volterra is not the easiest city to park in and the hotel has free parking facilities.
