    Public areas small but well decorated. Loved the Hallowe'en display! Evening wine reception was a very relaxed and pleasant event. Excellent location just a block and a bit from Union Square and just round the corner from National/Alamo car hire. Corridors and our room rather shabby but renovation was taking place. I would stay here again as it felt 'right'.

    This was my first stay at the Cartwright. We wanted something close to China Town and this was perfect. Easy walking distance from Bart and the Cable Cars. Room was a little small but comfortable. The bathroom was very small but everything we needed was provided. The staff was very courtious and knowledgeable of the area. We had a wonderful weekend in a resonably priced hotel.

    HOW TO REACH THE HOTEL
    By car
    From the South (Silicon Valley, the Peninsula, and San Francisco airport):
    Take Highway 101 North to San Francisco. Merge onto I-280 towards downtown San Francisco and take the 3rd Street Downtown exit (280 ends). Turn left at 3rd Street, go approximately 8 blocks and cross Market Street. Stay in the left lane, 3rd Street turns into Kearny Street. Go about 3 blocks to Sutter Street and turn left. The hotel is located just past Powell Street on the right side at 524 Sutter Street.
    From the East (Berkeley, Oakland airport, Interstate 80, and the Bay Bridge):
    Take Highway 80 West to the Bay Bridge/San Francisco. Cross the Bay Bridge and take the Fremont Street exit (first exit on the right side after crossing the Bay Bridge). Go 2 blocks and cross Market Street. Fremont Street becomes Front Street. Go a half block and turn left onto Pine Street. Go approximately 7 blocks on Pine Street. Turn left onto Powell Street, go 2 blocks and turn right on Sutter Street. The hotel is located on the right side of the street at 524 Sutter Street.
    From the North (Marin, Wine Country, and the Golden Gate Bridge):
    Take Highway 101 South. Cross the Golden Gate Bridge and take the Lombard Street exit. Follow Lombard approximately 1 mile/1.6 km. Turn right onto Van Ness Avenue. Go approximately 15 blocks on Van Ness (which is still Highway 101). Turn left on Bush Street and go approximately 8 blocks. Turn right on Powell Street, go 1 block and turn right on Sutter Street. The hotel is located on the right side of the street at 524 Sutter Street.

    By airplane
    The San Francisco International Airport (SFO) is about a twenty-minute drive from the hotel; distance is 15 miles/24 km. You can also take the BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) underground train. The ride is approximately 30 minutes and the nearest station from the property is Powell Street.
    The Oakland International Airport (OAK) is approximately forty minutes by car; distance is 20 miles/32 km. You can take the BART train which runs to downtown San Francisco. The ride is approximately 60 minutes and the nearest station to the hotel is Powell Street.
