Hotel Baldwin is a great value. The location is pretty much unbeatable for the price. I got it for $89/night in mid-February. It's right next to the Chinatown gate, Union Square, and 15 min. walk to Fisherman's Wharf. Rooms are small but clean and comfortable. There is some street noise, and some noise from the halls, but nothing unusual. The girl at the desk was knowledgeable about the city and friendly. We saw a variety of people at the hotel, looked like international tourists. It's a Euro-style hotel, so if you've stayed in typical European hotels it will be familiar. Parking is $22/day, pretty reasonable, but garage is about 2 blocks away. You can come and go with your car as you please though. There are a couple of nice wine bars across the street. Overall, for the money I don't think you could do much better.

I really enjoyed my stay here. It is a small, old-style hotel with friendly staff. It is very well located for shopping and transport. It was incredibly clean. I loved my room and the claw-foot bath in the bathroom.

Unless we are staying at a destination resort, my wife and I look for clean, comfortable, well-maintained properties in a good location with helpful staff. The Baldwin fit our requirements to a "T". As advertised, it was only steps away from the Grant Street entry to Chinatown with North Beach a short walk and Fisherman's Wharf a much longer but pleasant hike.
It was only a couple of short blocks from Market Street and mss transportation via Bart, bus and trolley.
We have generally stayed at small boutique hotels and bed & breakfasts when in San Francisco, but this was a last minute whim-trip and our usual haunts were taken. Next time the Baldwin will be our first choice.

it's a nice boutique hotel, great location and decor, very quaint, clean average size room, newly renovated bathrooms are white and very clean and comfortably-sized. the only downside is there's no bellman to help with the luggages. carry your own. knowledgable staff on tourist information.
Sear's fine food at powell street is a great place to eat. they have diner food but a notch better than normal diners. it's been around sice 1939. be there before 9am for breakfast, the line to get a table builds up after 9am!
another good diner is pinecrest along Mason street. it's open 24 hours.

I loved this hotel! We got a room with the clawed foot bathtub. Our view wasn't great (alleyway) but the rest of our room was fantastic. I have worked at 5 different hotels, in different states and this was one of the best hotels I have seen in a long time especially for its price. And the people at the front desk were immensely helpful, which was important because I had to make it to a Visa apt. by 10:00am and we were running late but they checked us into our room early and gave us excellent directions to the French Embassy! In the end, if you don't mind a bad view from the room everything else is just great and it is the hotel that I would recommend to any of my friends visiting San Fran.
