HOTEL OVERVIEW

Hotel 500 West Hotel San Diego - Venere.com exterior - entrance Welcome to 500 West, San Diego's new and hip hotel.

Guests of 500 West Hotel stay in a building that was designed by architect Frank W. Stevenson and constructed in 1924. The 500 West Hotel is one of San Diego’s most recognized and beloved historical landmarks. Before undergoing its multi-million dollar renovation in 2003, this icon on the San Diego skyline originally housed the U.S. Armed Services YMCA. This facility is famous for providing a safe retreat for U.S. Naval servicemen since WW II. Today, 500 West is regarded by savvy business and adventure travelers as San Diego’s first and funkiest hotel.

From the moment you step into our building adjacent to San Diego Bay, you realize this is no ordinary hotel. First, there’s our vibe. Very contemporary. Next, there’s our style and accommodations. Very European.

For active travelers, 500 West is the only hotel in Southern California with a professionally managed YMCA fitness center on site. This facility boasts an arsenal of health and recreation facility and services for our guests and their visitors. Facilities include: indoor basketball court and 100-metre running track, steam room sauna and whirlpool spa, treadmills, rowing machines and spin cycles with computerized performance monitoring, yoga and stretching classes and body sculpting machinery and free weights.

The hotel also offers Wi-Fi internet connection in the community TV lounge, the Johnson Hall, a 1,400 sq.ft. (130 sqm) Spanish Colonial Revival style open-air courtyard with ceramic tile floors basking in the warm San Diego sunlight, a special venue for very unconventional events, such as antique auctions, wedding receptions, tattoo conventions and album releases.

The 500 West Hotel is a cleverly rebranded YMCA. There is nothing wrong with that to me, and I think it is justifiable for them to bury the fact that they are a Y. The value I received at this property was unparalleled, and the service was accommodating, especially at a point when I needed to change my room type. There is WiFi Internet Access everywhere in the hotel, and the connection worked as well as could be expected (meaning that the bandwidth was somewhat limited, but it worked and didn't fail). I did not have the opportunity to take advantage of the $5/day gym access, but the equipment appeared as though it would have met my needs. The 500 West Hotel is right next door to a Westin Hotel, and across the street is a UPS Store where I shipped a parcel and had business presentation handouts printed and stapled. Across the street is a bagel shop with free WiFi. The conference I attended was at the Manchester Grand Hyatt (which is next door to the Marriott), and I could walk straight through the residential area and across a park and be at the Hyatt in 10 minutes. The biggest downfall was that there is no air conditioning in any of the rooms. Also, there are no rooms that have a bathroom and shower, but I never once needed to wait for a shower.

Excellent location for downtown San Diego. Good value for price. Light sleepers may be bothered by noise from the street and nearby railroad tracks. Not for families with young children.

This hotel did an excellent job of using the website to make this place look like something it's not. The site makes it look very cool and contemporary and maybe there was a room somewhere in there that looked like that, but we stayed two different nights and neither of the rooms we got looked like the one in the picture. By contemporary, what they really mean is that they took an old run-down building and threw in a few things like new ceiling fans, new desks, a cute little flat TV in each room, some contemporary towel hooks, but that's about it. They by no means renovated this place at all. The carpets are stained in the hallways. It looks like a really crappy college dorm. The people were nice though except that one guy who was new told us that our card was declined when in fact he had made a mistake. I would actually consider staying here again though. We went here because it is the best price you're going to find on a hotel in downtown San Diego. The location is excellent and perfect if you are planning to get on a cruise ship and just need a place to sleep the night before or after the cruise.

This is a really cheap accomodation downtown San Diego. The rooms are small and furnishing and equipment are low avarage, but it is really clean. Thus, it depends on what you want: if you like to stay in a hotel with some kind of extravagance, then you should look for a "real" hotel; if you just want to have a reasonable accomodation for sleeping but want to be at the right place in town, then you are right here. Shared bathrooms need getting used to it, but if you dont have a problem with it - they are really clean. The advertised kitchen at the second floor turned out to be just a couple of drink vending maschines - dont expect too much from this. In fact, this was the only quite disappointing thing I recognized. Public transport is just in front, some restaurants you find some blocks away.

So convenient, close to everything and we laughed at the tiny price we paid. We attended a conference in SD so spent very little time in the hotel. Our room was microscopic and noisy but if you can stand having the bathrooms down the corridor, this is the best value in town. We stayed for a week. The Staff were helpful.
