| Pompeii was completely buried by the eruption of the 79 a.D, followed by other seventy eruptions up to the last one on 1944. For centuries nothing was known about Pompeii, we had the first retrieval only on 1628, during some works made on the Sarno Valley, where emerged some ruins that aroused scientists of that period. But only a century after began in Herculaneum, and about ten years later in Pompeii, the regular excavations encouraged by Charles III of Borbone, king of the Two Sicilies, but the research aimed only at the finding of material for museums or for the decoration of royal palaces, while the dug up buildings, once despoiled of the masterpieces, were left without any care and exposed to weather conditions. Only with Joseph Bonaparte and Joachim Murat the works took back with great emphasis and with a great employment of manpower trying to identify the perimeter of the whole city and moving the interest from the mere recovery of precious objects to the knowledge of the architecture and the urbanism. During the Savoy period, Giuseppe Fiorelli, teacher of archaeology, divided Pompeii in regions and islands numbering all the houses, a system still in use today. Furthermore, belongs to him the invention of the method to pour with plaster the spaces left by the victims, obtaining a cast of the bodies, caught in the moment of death, with dramatic and intense effects. The years that followed were the best, widening the researches toward east and toward Nola Gate and bringing to light numerous houses. Between 1924 and 1961 Amedeo Maiuri wanted to learn more about the history of Pompeii studying the previous phases of the city and the most ancient layers such as the Forum, the temples and the walls. In the last thirty years, a modest exploration has been alternate to the activity of maintenance and safeguard, things of primary importance in this place unique in the world. |

Everything about our stay was disappointing. The receptionist couldn't take her eyes off the computer long enough to greet us when we arrived. We had booked 2 single rooms and were allocated 2 family rooms, which needed modernisation. How anyone rated the hotel as quiet is beyond me. There is 24 hour non stop traffic on the main road outside the hotel. Not all rooms have views of the ruins, as advertised. There may be 4 restaurant rooms but it is almost impossible to get a meal as hotel guests come second to the numerous visiting groups. When we did get a meal, it was expensive and not very nice - a very disappointing introduction to real Italian pasta! We were moved to smaller, more modern rooms for our second night, which were also very noisy. We did see one member of staff smile on our last morning but he was the only one!
Think twice before staying here!

We were an American and Scot traveling together, with separate rooms. The rooms were lovely and being right next to the archaeological site was very convenient. The staff were nice, especially one waiter, who was charming and very kind. We left before breakfast was served, but he brought us cappucino and about 4 kinds of rolls so we could eat before the taxi came. I was prepared for the large bus tour groups at lunch because of other reviews, so that was fine. The only disappointment was that the food, though nicely served, was not good quality. The soup was so salty that we could not eat it, and my friend's fish was not so good. My omlette was fine. So: the hotel itself is quite good but be careful about eating in their dining room. After the small rooms in Rome, it was luxurious to have a bigger space, and the hotel itself is from a past era, with great public spaces, as the photos show. NOTE: If you are interested in Pompeii, leave time to spend a day at the Archaeological Museum of Naples to see all the items removed from Pompeii to preserve them. We didn't have time to do this and were disappointed. But Pompeii itself was fascinating!!

I was a solo traveler and arrived very late. The male receptionist was very kind and offered me dinner in the dining room. I didn't get to choose from a menu, they just had what they call the "tourist" dinner for 16euros. The waiter was very kind.
The rooms were spacious enough and I had a beautiful view of the Pompeii Scavi from my rooftop balcony. The rooms were clean and quiet. Most of the staff was absolutely wonderful. Very friendly, helpful and courteous. However, one waiter, during the second dinner I had there rolled his eyeballs at me when I asked for the menu. I guess he was planning on me just eating the "tourist" dinner. It was the same food I had the night before and I didn't really want to eat that, but I could see I irritated him so I decided to eat the same thing two nights in a row. I chose not to eat there again after that. The other person who wasn't too friendly was one of the night receptionist. He was cold and again I seemed to be irritating him. He was on the phone one night. I stood there along with another couple for several minutes waiting for him. Although I don't speak much Italian I could tell this was a personal phone call. The other coupld finally left without talking with him. I stood there and waited for over 5 minutes. Again, it just made me feel like I was inconveniencing him. The hotel is right in the mix of all the tourist tents. Good location to the scavi entrance. The hot water and the water pressure was inconsistent. I Had to wait sometimes for hot water to take a shower. I would return to this hotel, but I would probably stay at the Villa Dei Misteri Hotel again next time.
