After much research online we chose the Olissippo Hotel and were very pleased with our choice. It is located right by the Castle of St George which is a definite must to visit. Since the hotel location is up one of the hills that make up Lisbon, anyone staying there should realize that walking to and from the hotel will be up and down the hill. The walk is not bad for someone who enjoys walking and is in reasonable shape but anyone with health issues might have to utilize taxis or the electric rail cars. Having said that, my wife and I walked to and from the hotel with no problem. It was a nice walk to the Rua Augusta area where we loved walking through all the shops and eating at the Pastelarias. Along the way to Rua Augusta, there were also many little shops and eating places to explore. This is quintessential "old Europe" so slow down your pace and savor it if you can. This location is also far from the main arteries that run through the city and therefore provided a nice quiet environment. The breakfast was very good: great pastries, breads, cold cuts, cereals, juices, along with scrambled eggs and bacon. Please note the bacon is not fried until crispy like Americans usually like but it is very tasty nonetheless. Someone had previously commented they thought the bacon was "boiled". NOT TRUE! Our room (401) offered an incredible view of the city, had all the room we needed and had a nice roomy bathroom. From what I could see the 3rd floor (the floor below us) seemed to offer access to an outdoor patio with the same view. Everything was very clean and they even gave us a small bottle (200 ml) of Port Wine later on our day of arrival. We thought that was a really nice touch. If you like a firm bed then you will love this one. It did not hamper our sleep but some might find it too hard. The hotel is small in size so it offers a more personal touch than the larger ones. We were both extremely pleased with our choice and will definitely stay there again next time.

The hotel is fantastic! located right in the heart of Alfama! unfortunately our windows didn't look at San Jorge Castle, but anyway our stay at this hotel was great! Breakfast is good- eggs, becon, fruits, cereals, fresh juice, even famous pasteis de nata from Belem (sorry for wrong spelling).the staff was welcoming and we enjoyed our stay a lot!

Our reception from (male) receptionist was efficient but quite lacking in warmth. Rooms (superior worth booking) were spacious with great view and huge terrace. Location would suit good walkers, as streets are medieval, cobbled and steep. Tram use is essential. Don't bring the car!

Good location of the Hôtel, few stairways to go to the commercial quater, five minutes to the Castelo and to the famous quater of Alfama. A real nice view from the room. If you don't want to walk, you have many taxis aivalable and the Tram 28 wich brings everywhere across the tight streets of the Alfama...

An excellent tourist hotel in the old city near to the castle. We had room 302 which was very spacious, with a large terrace and lovely view. Only slight criticism with the room was the lack of tea / coffee making facilities and no iron / ironing board, which you would expect with a 4* hotel. Very nice guesture of a small bottle of Ruby Port in the room upon arrival. Hotel was very clean, quiet, restful and well maintained and the staff did all they could to help. Breakfast was the usual continental offering plus a small cooked selection of bacon, scrambled eggs and small frankfurters. I would certainly recommend this hotel to any tourist visiting Lisbon and I will stay there again if returning. The only restaurant I could recommend from our 3 day visit is Sur Sangam, which is in the main town at Rua dos Correeiros no126, 1100-163, Lisoa. Tel/fax 21 346 91 19, which served very good Portuguese, Italian and India food, with first class service and at a reasonal price.

Staff were friendly and very helpful answered all questions and assisted with directions and transport to and from hotel to centre, helpful with sightseeing and places to eat. See the castle as early as possible, views amazing. They have markets on Saturdays. Nice walk to square not far and you can stop at cathedral and sightsee on way down.

The area of Lisbon that the hotel is situated in is very, very steep, and tricky to navigate for the first time without a very good map. We're putting this first because it was our only problem. Lisbon's public transport system is excellent (and cheap), but the tram will only get you so close to the hotel, and after that it's a bit of a struggle with cases. However, as we discovered on the way home, taxis are very cost-effective. Check-in was handled warmly and efficiently, as were all our later visits to Reception. Our room was a standard double, but was of a size that would be considered deluxe in most European cities - especially as it had a huge 2-level terrace. The Castelo is well-deserving of its 4 stars, with the usual bathrobes, good toiletries and superb room service. Free wi-fi is available in the lobby, with plenty of sofas, but fortunately the signal reached at least as far as our room on the second floor. Breakfast went beyond the usual continental selection (which was vast), with American-style bacon, eggs and sausage. The area is not very touristy - something that we quite enjoy. However, this does mean that a bit of legwork is required to see the sights, although the hotel is right against the castle walls. There are a number of small restaurants nearby, and we would particularly recommend the one opposite the nearby São Tomé tram stop. The Parque das Nações on the outskirts of the city is well worth a visit, in particular the Lisbon Oceanarium.

A special hotel in a very nice location. Fantastic view, decanter of port on arrival, all the things mentioned in other reviews. Buy unlimited-travel cards to ride the tram. Be sure to try the tiny Tia Chica restaurant nearby (exit hotel, turn right, go downhill for a short ditance, it's on your right).

We had a very pleasant stay. The staff were very kind. The best of the room is the terrace and the views. The restaurant is sometimes cold because is next to the principal door of the hotel. The breakfast is appropriate except sausages and salad food, sometimes it finished.

We stayed at the Olissippo for 2 nights and we were then spending some time up the coast. We loved our stay so much that we booked 2 more nights at the hotel. We stayed in a room with a terrace and it was fantastic. It was such great value for the high standard and the staff were very friendly. The taxis to and from the airport are cheap and there is a tram stop really near the hotel which is a great way to see the city. Lisbon is so easy to get around on foot and there is also a metro. I could not fault this hotel. When I read reviews the only negative said to be early for breakfast as the food would be gone and while this seems to be true, the staff asked us if we would like anything when we were late one morning. The rooms are completely quiet I did not hear any noise whatsoever from any other guest and as a really nice touch some port was left in the room. I am just looking forward to going back.

Though it is a good location to see the castle and the church, its top of the hill location makes it inconvenient to around especially at night. The cable car stops after around 9:30pm and you certainly will need a cab to get back to the hotel. I would suggest staying there a portion of your stay in Lisbon to get the nice views and easy access to the Alfama and Castle area.

Staying in Olissippo Castelo for two days after a riding holiday in Portugal was worth every penny! Quiet hotel with magnificent view over the town and walking distance to the city center. Friendly quiet athmosphere and good recommendations for local restaurants. Excellent! I can warmly recommend to everyone and I will return. The balcony of our suite was really big...was expecting a little balcony but it was a whole patio/veranda. Nice surprise!

This is a great hotel: beautiful design, very clean, spacious rooms, friendly and helpful staff. The location is good; a 10 minute walk from the center of town. It's on the top of a steep hill, but we didn't mind the exercise. The hotel is close to the very charming Alfama neighborhood where we ended up having most of our meals in tiny, rustic cafes and restaurants. On the other side of the hill, closest to the Olisippo hotel, is the Mouraria neighborhood. This is a poor area, but we never felt unsafe and even had some nice walks in the charming alleys that sometimes turn into stairs.

We very much enjoyed staying in the Olissippo but the hotel is not easy to reach with a bigger car like a station car. The traffic control "pole" that blocks traffic can be lowered but the how-to is not clear. We were fortunate to be able to park in the garage but there are a limited number of parking spaces.

A well placed hotel for visiting the castle and surrounding area. Easy, quick and cheap tram journey into centre of town. Not many bars and restaurants nearby - plenty in the town centre of course. Fantastic views over Lisbon. If we visited again we would request a room with a terrace as there is not really anywhere to sit outside. Breakfasts are good but not that many tables and we did have to wait on occasions.Staff were really polite and helpful at all times.

The Hotel Olissippo Castelo is ideally situated for people who want to explore the Alfama district of Lisbon. The rooms and hotel in general are of a very high standard and the staff are only too pleased to give advise to help you find your way around Lisbon. Lastly, not forgetting the views from your terrace are magnificant.

The room was very spacious, clean and comfortable. The staff was extremely helpful and knowledgeable. A great stay, overall. A list of local restaurants within a short walk would have been helpful, as it was difficult to walk in the immediate area at night given the cobbles, steepness and low lighting.

We loved this hotel. The staff were excellent and helpful; the room was large and clean and very comfortable. On arriving there was wine and cookies in our room. The location in Lisbon is not for the faint of heart; there are steep hills when walking and driving is not recommended. We enjoyed the views, the walks, the breakfast and all the help we received from the staff. Would definitely stay there again.

The strongest reason I'd recommend this hotel is for the LOCATION! It's on top of a hill in an old part of Lisbon (Alfama) and has a MILLION$ view! You can also see breathtaking sunset and sunrise over the city. Front-desk service is courteous but not very efficient. There was no offer or service for luggage so be prepared to carry your own weight! Breakfast food items are not replenished so don't be late! Also we couldn't even get coffee when we had to catch an early flight home the last morning! I still recall the small hotel in Athens, Greece which brought us a FULL breakfast tray to our room at 4AM when we had to catch an early flight!

I had booked a twin room and we were given a suite - we had a full lounge area and beautiful terrace overlooking Lisbon. We enjoyed out hotel room so much we stayed in on Saturday night and stayed until 12pm checkout. The only downside was the room service food was below average and they did not restock the breakfast buffet so you had to get in early if you wanted choice. The hotel was located high on the hills, I found it quite tricky navigating into town as the streets are very windy and not well sign-posted and the maps aren't as detailed as they need to be.

I expected the hotel to provide at least one computer with Internet access for holidaying guests. Not everyone on holidays carries a laptop. I also found the darkness at the lift lobby (first floor) unsettling. Although the lights came on as soon as motion was detected the first impression wan not welcoming. One small light would not cost too much to run, and would improve the feeling on first getting out of a lift.

My wife and I had a very enjoyable stay at this hotel. If you have not been to this hotel before we recommend you take a taxi as it can be difficult to find. A taxi costs approximately 15 Euros (with luggage charge), from the airport. The hotel is on a hill near the castle, there are a lot of narrow cobbled streets around this area - good walking shoes are recommended.

Me and my wife (italians) had a beatiful stay in Olissipo; I cannot forget the "bienvenido aperitivo" with Porto wine at the welcome in the hotel! Very nice is the view of the town and, generally, the atmosphere is fascinating. Some disadvantage to reach the hotel at the top of Alfama, but also at night taxis cost few euros. I strongly suggest Olissipo to spend vacation in Lisboa.

Our suite was spacoius and very comfortable, but the beds were much too hard. The hotel is quiet and nice, and we had a great view of the city from our terrace. An Internet computer available for the guests would have been nice. It's a steep climb from the city to the hotel, but we quickly learnt to use the trams. Our reservation for 3 persons via Venere.com did not show the price with the extra bed, but that's not the hotel's fault. Venere is to blame, but we had to pay 30 Euro extra per night.

We had a gorgeous view of the city from our balcony. The breakfast was excellent- a good way to fuel up for climbing up and down all the hills. The only - very small - issue was the lack of a front desk clerk at times. The clerk would approach after a short while, probably seeing us on a camera or something from the back room. We saw this same thing with other guests as well.

The patio outside the room offered fantastic views of the city, the river and the Alfama district. The room was very comfortable with lots of closet space and spacious bathroom. The staff were helpful in answering questions. (The restaurant staff had limited English skills but the others were fluent in spanish and english.) Very close to Castelo do Sao Jorge. Be prepared for lots of up and down walking. Would not have felt comfortable walking alone at night as the streets are dark and narrow. However, the area has alot of old world charm. A superb "boutique" hotel, but I can comment only on the "superior" rooms. I did not see their "regular" rooms. The only "fault" is the location. It edges on a very rough area, from which we were urged away by the local police -- during the daytime -- when changed trams there to visit a local shop. We did walk safetly through this area in daylight, and perceived no threats. On the other hand, perhaps that is the price paid for truly outstanding vistas from our room...and you can walk in the other direction without a problem! Excellent, free "American" breakfast...on equal par with the one served (on the same trip) in our Paris hotel at a cost of 17 Euros each! One warning for anyone planning to visit Portugal, however... While we can't speak to the beds other than at the Olissippo and at a condo we used the following week in the Algarve, the beds in Portugal seem to be exceptionally HARD. At both locations, we woke up feeling bruised!

This is a very nice hotel where everyone was nice and friendly and is well situated up on the hill and close to lots of the sites (provided you don't mind the uphill getting home, although there is the tram that takes you most of the way). Only downside was that upon arrival we were given a small room without a terrace contrary to what we had reserved. The hotel staff couldn't change us right away but changed our room the next day without a fuss. We arrived quite late but half an hour before the room service was supposed to end, however, we were told it was closed which was a little frustrating. If you plan to have a car, try and reserve a space for your stay before you get there (EUR10 a day) because the garage is very small and on street parking is very tight. It is perhaps a little far from the night hotspots but it's a nice walk.

Staff were very helpful. Streets around the hotel are steep so be prpared for some exercise. We were a litle wary about walking around the area near the hotel at night but no problems arose.

Excellent peaceful location with lovely views but a bit of a climb if on foot. Recommend the bedrooms with terrace - quite spacious, with loungers. Hotel staff are friendly and helpful and the breakfasts are good, although at peak times slight delay in clearing tables. The action in Bairro Alto is an amazing switch-back tram-ride away (consider buying a tram/metro pass).

We had a wonderful stay at Olissippo! We even came back to stay for the last two nights of our vacation. Everyone was kind and efficient, especially the desk clerks. They were most willing to help us with ideas and suggestions. We had some good, vegetarian meals at the Teatro Taborna just up the street. It was most convenient after our busy days in Lisbon. Our waitress, Julia, was so engaging and full of life! This restaurant has its own herb garden on the hillside outside the restaurant. The hotel was quiet and very clean. Breakfasts were just incredible! Delicious and generous beyond belief; we were able to skip lunch somedays. Our last two nights we had a suite on the third floor with a huge patio and a stunning view of Lisbon which we will carry in our hearts for a long time. Each of us hopes to return in the future. With years of travel experience, I highly recommend this lovely hotel - a perfect place to stay near both the castle and the Alfama.

This is an excellent hotel. We arrived late due to problems with Iberia who had lost our luggage and delayed our transit - the staff gave us all necessities to get us through the first night and upgraded us to their suite. The rest of our stay was amazing, as the hotel. Quality/price - this hotel is unbeatable

This hotel is an absolute gem, with wonderful views of Lisbon. The personnel are friendly, helpful, and professional. This was our second stay at the Olissippo and this hotel has become one of our favorites in all of Europe.

Very nice view. The breakfirst was a bit boring but still ok. It probably depends at which time you are having your breakfirst.

This beautiful hotel is not centrally located: It is not ideally located to go back take a nap between museums and dinner for instance. But the view is incomparable, and once you understand where you are (it's tricky), it does communicate with the neighborhood. And you will be doing more walking up and down than if you had stayed at another hotel.

Very happy with the hotel; it was excellent value for the price we paid. Only one gripe; considering the general standard, the coffee at breakfast was disappointing, kept in vacuum jugs, so neither fresh nor warm. To be fair, they did give you an espresso for no extra charge if you asked, but I would have preferred fresh breakfast coffee.

Excellent stay, very friendly and competent employees, good breakfast. Not mentioned in the brochure, but evenso very convenient is the opportunity to have small meals/snacks from lunchtime until late at night. Just mind that the hotel is located on the hill nearby the Sao Jorge Castle and that it takes quite a walk to the city centre and a stiff climb to get back to the hotel. We were very happy with the accomodation. However we were VERY disappointed that the internet price was not honoured. Despite clearly requesting one double & one triple rooms, we were shocked to be charged 25 euro extra per night for the extra bed. The all inclusive internet price was 510 euros for a family of 5 for 3 nights, but we were forced to pay an extra 75 euros. As we were in a rush to catch our plane we couldn't argue the point, so we reluctantly paid the extra amount. We would like a refund of the 75 euros which we believe was wrongly charged.

A very good and priceworthy hotel. The situation is very good with a wonderful view over Lisbon. There are many stairs when you go up from downtown, but it is worth it when you finally reach the hotel. A kind and serviceminded staff. The doubleroom superior is really something extra.

We absolutely loved the hotel. The staff was gracious and helpful. The rooms were spacious and comfortable. The food was good. Our children rated the hotel one of the top one or two we've ever stayed in -- they really felt comfortable. The location was great -- definitely a workout for the legs walking down into the Baixa and back up -- but very convenient. We look forward to coming back since it is only a six hour drive from Madrid.

I would really like to recommend this hotel to everyone except he/she ist handicapped as it is located down the Castelo which means you climb a lot of steps during your stay! In fact the hotel is perfectly run and you have a wonderful view over Lisboa from the terrace! The staff is very nice and keen to satify all your requirements. We were a pary of 4 friends and we all enjoyed our stay at Hotel Olissipo Castelo very much!

A beautiful hotel, very new. Good location near downtown but away from the noise and crowds. Good view of city. On the hill below Castelo San Jorje but easily reached by trolly. Excellent staff, especially Luis at the reception desk and the dining room waitress. I would return and recommend this hotel to friends.

With the Olissipo Hotel it should be noted that the Standard Rooms have a terrace and are on the lower floors and the Superior Rooms have no terrace but are on the top floor so have fabulous views. Breakfast was served until 11am but after 10am the hot plates were cold and often the food was mostly finished! However, it was a very quiet hotel in a fantastic location and a high standard of room at a very good rate and I would recommend it to anyone going to Lisbon.
