Excellent hotel, especially regarding the quality versus price ratio and the warm and competent staff. Minor points (although not to be exaggerated) are the nightly rumour from the close by superstrada) and the relatively difficult way of getting there (more signs ?).

Of all the hotels we stayed at in Italy, Hotel Park Ge.Al tops them all with the helpfulness, friendliness and warmth of their staff. This made it a great place to stay, and we used it as a base for exploring some of the Umbrian medieval towns. We did have a little trouble finding it, and forgot to look for and take the map that may have been on Venere's website! As Kiwis driving on the 'wrong' side (to us) of the road, negotiating several roundabouts just before the hotel also meant we had missed the hotel sign. We cannot praise this hotel highly enough. It might be classed as 3-star, but it gives 5-star service. The complementary little bottle of bubbly was a lovely surprise too.

This is the first time we had visited Citta di Castello and also the first time in Italy that we had hired a car as we normally travel in Italy by train. The town is delightful and well worth a visit and the resturants that we visited are very welcoming with fantastic food. The hotel is a little way out of town approx 15 minutes walk along busy main roads until you reach the outskirts of the town and then the roads do calm down a bit. It took us a long time to find the hotel if you miss one vital signpost you end up going round and round the town - which is no bad thing as you then get your bearings!. On arriving at Hotel Park Ge Al they have their own car parking and the receptionist was most welcoming and informative about good restaurants in the town. The room was spacious and clean and we were welcomed with a small bottle of white wine and some fruit. The only problem with the location of the hotel is that behind it are residential properties which sound as if they have about 20 dogs and therefore the noise during the night can be very off putting if you are a light sleeper like my husband who said that one dog in particular was howling a classical tune! Other than this the hotel is fine for the money.

The only reproach I can make is regarding the telephone. I intended to use it in order to load my mails and I could not. (No problem the next days in other hotels in another area in Italy). For the rest everything was perfect and specially the welcoming.

The pool was nice, but it was dirty. It could be that we were early in the season, but I do not know. The cushions on the lawn chairs were disgusting. The room was nice and the bathroom was huge and when we arrived there was a welcome fruit basket with champagne complimentary. The centro storico was not really that great so we ventured to Lago di Trasimeno.

From Florence: take the A1 motorway as far as Arezzo and then follow along highway 73 (E78) to Città di Castello.

By airplane
The nearest airports are in Perugia (about 50 km) and Florence (about 120 km).
