A very compact hotel in the heart of the old Hania City. The hotel is very difficult to access by car for the first time and needs some very specific map data. Lots of Character & typical of a small venetian hotel.

Our stay at El Greco made our stay in Chania that much more memorable. The staff was extremely helpful and knowledgeable about all of Crete and always had great recommendations for us on where to go and what to do. Part of our daily routine was to talk to staff at the door about what we wanted to do the next day and they would provide many helpful suggestions (we would have never found a few restaurants without them). We had a very nice room on the 3rd floor with a balcony and a view. We were there for a week spanning late Feb - early March, so it was the off season for tourists. For price vs quality, El Greco was the best! The rooms, while a tad small, were clean, well kept and very charming. Wireless internet was a big plus. For convenience, it is near to the old harbour and all its restaurants (however if you REALLY want my opinion, avoid them at all costs... they are tourist traps. Spend the extra 10-15 min to walk into town. You will find WAY better coffee shops, restaurants and overall value for your money). I would definitely stay here again and our many thanks to the staff that made our trip special.

We stayed at this hotel in 2006 and are returning in 2008. Clean and comfortable rooms, helpful staff and great buffet breakfast. Fantastic value. Theotokopoulou is near enough to the harbour and busy streets without being too busy itself. It's pedestrianised but you do get the odd motorbike (where don't you!). Good deals on car hire at the hotel too.

The El Greco is in an excellent location in the old quarter of Chania. Just make sure that your taxi driver drops you off on Theotokopolou St (just 100 yds from the hotel) instead of Halkidiki St which requires dragging the suitcases through narrow crowded streets. We stayed in a top floor room and thank goodness for the lift! The room was cleaned every day to a very high standard. The hotel staff all speak good engflish and were very helpful in getting taxis etc. The hotel is situated on a pedestianised road and there are no streets at the rear and so the hotel is blissfully quiet. Chania can easily be explored in a day and so I would suggest a hire car if your stay is any longer. The traffic in Chania is frightening to begin with but OK when you get used to it. Overall we would definitely book at this hotel again. The only slight disappointment was the breakfast. Better breakfasts could be found at any number of local restaurants, although you'll probably end up paying a little more. Missing the ouzo and sunshine already!

It was the first stage of out two weeks vacation in Creete. The hotel fully complied our expectation (quiet, nice, not expensive, in the middle of the historical town and just one minute walking from the port and surrounded by restaurants, shops selling typical products from Creete and any other amenity). Just opposite a nice bar for great breakfast and last drink before sleeping. Much more important : also very romantic. Suggestion : visit terrace on the roof for a better view.

Nice hotel located in the center of Hania. The hotel sorroundigs it's very beatiful and near the harbour. We have found 2 little troubles: the presence of "starving" mosquitos; really the room overlooks the venetian wall, but the distance it's about 4 meters.... I suggest it for the location.

Nice small privately owned hotel in a pedestrian-only street in the Topanas part of Chania's Venetian Harbour. Our room was a bit small but well-equipped and clean. Tea and coffee making facilities are not available in hotel rooms neither in Greece, nor in Germany or Holland, even in higher-ranking hotels. Lots of small hotels, cafes, tavernas and small shops all around. The rooms facing the street can be a bit noisy early in the morning, when deliveries are being made. There is a cafe across the road "The Komoranos" which does excellent breakfast of various kinds and mezedes for later on in the day. There is breakfast available at the hotel, but €6,00/person is a but much for continental breakfast, in my opinion. The "Paradosiakos" is a taverna where we had excellent fresh fish at a reasonable price a few times. It is only a few steps from the hotel. The harbour is also only a few minutes walk away from the hotel, but you don't hear the noise which is a blessing.

Nice hotel located in a superb surrounding! Cannot recommend to single travellers. I had a room at the top of the roof with roofgarden nice view - however this roofgarden could be used by other guests, too, which could be noisy at night

Excellent location. Free web access in the lobby. Having booked some 6 weeks in advance, we were given the last available room, on the ground floor (#6), which gets light only through the 1 m narrow gap between the house and the high city wall. Water dripped through the ceiling near the door (Bathroom leak upstairs), mould on a far corner indicated an earlier similar problem there; there also was water on our bathroom floor the source of which we could not identify. The room was well appointed, but very noisy through the door: one heard all the lobby talk and then, from before six in the morning, people leaving and the next door breakfast room being prepared: plates being set, cutlery clanging, chairs being moved, people treading and talking, machinery being activated - think of trying to sleep inside an active kitchen - no chance. We left in despair after one sleep-deprived night, while people with rooms upstairs enjoyed the quiet. I strongly advise against room number 6!

This little hotel served its purpose admirably. Our room was small but perfectly adequate and had a little balcony. There are larger rooms. It offers few facilities, but those it offers were fine. If you have a car you have to park on the street down the road, but that was not difficult. Helpful and pleasant staff. The town centre location was perfect for exploring the old centre of Chania on foot, but if you are driving try to get a map that shows the one-way roads.

Charming hotel in old Venetian quarter, with lovely, helpful staff. Really great location. Rooms at the back are quieter. Considerably less expensive than other (less charming) places we stayed on Crete. Highly recommended.

Beautiful, cool, quiet hotel in heart of old town (definitely the prime location in Chania), close to the old port on pedestrianised street. Old building in terrace of shops, houses and other small hotels; elegant traditional interior with stone and wood. Fantastic buffet breakfast for just 5 euros, toast, coffee, croissants, juice, cereal, fruit - help yourself to as much as you want. They also have a hire car service at good rates which is very convenient.

We were unexpected. We were assigned a very nice large room with 2 double beds because that is what was available. Our price was honored, but I needed my printout because they had no idea of the contract price. The drain in the bathroom floor was unclean & smelled of sewer gas, but keeping the bathroom ventilation fan on constantly kept the room from stinking. In their defense, much of the old town smells of sewer gas. The common use balconies are really nice, the staff was very helpful and spoke excellent English. The best hidden asset, easy access from the FREE car park at the waterfront. Many hotels are a long walk on pedestrianized streets to drag your luggage.
